Miami news: Sergio Busquets set for retirement at the end of the MLS season
The 37-year-old veteran announced today that he is retiring, following the conclusion of this year's MLS campaign.
After spending 18 years at Barcelona and making his senior debut in 2008, Busquets reunited with his former Barcelona teammates in 2023 when he joined Inter Miami.
Here, Florida News Blitz writer Joseph Hannen examines the legendary legacy Busquets will leave behind and the immediate impact he has made at Inter Miami.
Inter Miami impact
In an official club statement, Inter Miami has said: “ Busquets has been instrumental in the club's continual growth, contributing his vision and quality in midfield, as well as his experience and leadership.”
Busquets has etched his name in Inter Miami history due to his pivotal role in the inaugural 2023 Leagues Cup win and 2024 Supporters’ Shield, as well as helping the club break the MLS points record in a single season.
The Spanish veteran has already racked up 105 appearances in pink, playing alongside former legendary teammates Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez, and Jordi Alba.
Inter Miami added, “ The team now looks forward to his contribution in the push for its objectives during the final stretch of the campaign, which will bring a close to an extraordinary career.”

Why Busquets is one of a kind
Many football fans considered Busquets a highly unique player with no one coming close to his ability as a defensive midfielder.
This is mainly due to his incredible intelligence on the pitch, which has seen him redefine the defensive midfielder role.
His press resistance, ability to read the game, and potential to dictate games on his own quickly turned him into a world-class player.
Busquets brought these qualities to the MLS, and despite joining at the age of 35, his intelligence and leadership have remained at an exceptionally high level.
Decorated in glory
Busquets won an absurd 32 trophies whilst playing for Barcelona, including three Champions League titles.
Other accolades include nine La Liga titles, seven Copa del Rey titles, seven Spanish Super Cups, and three Super Cups and Club World Cups each.
Busquets brought this winning mentality to Inter Miami, as the 2023 Leagues Cup was the first major honour in the club's history.
Both Busquets and Inter Miami will be hopeful that this year's campaign can end on a high note and that Busquets receives the send-off he most definitely deserves.
